DIRECTOR
Born in Denmark, Anna Sofie started her film career still in 9th grade with her first internship at Lars von Trier’s production company Zentropa. From age 16 she spent her school holidays on film sets of Annette K. Olesen, Thomas Vinterberg and others before she started studying at the European Film College in Aarhus and at the Germany Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). Her first feature film “Limbo” (2014), a sensitive drama about the life of young adults in her hometown of Nakskov, premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Among others, the film was screened at IFF Rotterdam, SXSW and Copenhagen PIX, before being nominated for a European Discovery Award at the 2015 European Film Awards.
Her second feature “Giraffe” (2019), starring Lisa Loven Koingsli, Jakub Gierszał and Maren Eggert, was produced by Komplizen Film and Profile Pictures. It premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, and was shown at several film festivals such as San Sebastian IFF, Mar del Plata IFF, Thessaloniki IFF, CPH PIX and the Viennale, where it received the FIPRESCI price. In 2021 „Giraffe“ was awarded as Best Film at the German Critic’s Awards.
She directed multiple episodes of the Grimme Preis nominated ZDF/Kika series “Echt” and the coming of age-mystery series “Feelings”.
Anna Sofie Hartmann had her first solo exhibition of her photography works titled „I wish I could tell you how I feel“ at the Goethe Institute in Seattle (USA), in 2022. She is the recipient of grants from Nordisk Film Fondet, Lolland Kommunes Kunstlegat, the German National Academic Foundation, The Arts Council of Denmark, and the Villa Aurora. She lives in Berlin.
